The new year always brings a fresh start. And with that fresh start, we set goals. But the problem most of us face is that we set goals that sound great, but with no plan to actually achieve them. So how do you set goals that you’ll actually achieve?
Set goals that are measurable
If you can’t measure your goal, how will you know if you’ve achieved it? Too often, we keep our goals vague, which makes them impossible for us to track.
Maybe you want to get more clients. Well, “Get more clients,” is far too vague of a goal. What counts as more, and when will you know if you have enough?
Instead, figure out how many clients you actually need, by determining how much money you need to make, and how many projects you need to sell. That will tell you how many clients you actually need to get.
Make a plan to achieve your goals
Next, you have to make a plan to help you achieve your goals. Knowing you need 10 clients in a year is great, but you can’t then just sit back and wait for them to show up. You have to actively work to get clients.
Make a plan by breaking down the actions you need to take to reach your goal. If you need 10 clients in a year, that’s almost one per month. How will you get them? List out action steps you’ll take each month to attract and land new clients.
Will you contact people in your network asking them to refer you?
Will you participate in Facebook groups where your clients hang out?
But don’t just stop there. WHO will you contact in your network to ask for referrals? How many people from your network will you contact? How often?
WHAT Facebook groups will you participate in? How long will you spend in them each week? How will you make people want to hire you?
Break your goal into steps that you can take, and check off a list.
Vague goals are impossible to achieve. Make your goals clear.
Create a plan to achieve your goals. Break your goal down into action steps that you can follow, check off a list, and know that you’re accomplishing.
You can’t wait for your goals to happen, you have to make them happen.
