Note: This post contains affiliate links, but I whole-heartedly recommend these companies. I will receive a small commission if you sign up for any of the hosts recommended below.
As web designers (and developers) we often end up providing more than just beautiful websites. Our clients turn to us for advice on hosting and the best place to make their online home.
Don’t do your clients a disservice by recommending a cheap host with terrible customer service. Although the price might seem right, every time their site is down they’ll blame you for the recommendation. Every time customer service fails to help them, they’ll blame you. Every time they’re tricked into “upgrading” their purchase (I’m looking at you, GoDaddy), they’ll blame you.
And of course, you have no control over a hosting company’s uptime or service, but why not recommend a hosting company that takes pride in what they do, and that strives to provide great service–instead of the company that focuses solely on getting as many customers as possible, and puts service on the back burner?
These hosting companies I have personally used, and recommend to clients. They are a little more expensive than your $5/month webhost, but you get what you pay for, and the customer service and hosting these companies provide are well worth it.
If your clients are only running WordPress, Flywheel is my first choice. They not only make it easy to develop the site and switch billing to the client, but their customer service is top-notch. Beyond that, they provide one-click restores if your client breaks her site, as well as security and core updates. I adore Flywheel and for 90% of my clients, they are the perfect fit. Plus, since they only do WordPress they are boss at trouble-shooting your client’s WordPress site–taking pressure off you!
For clients with more than one site, or who need more than a WordPress install, LiquidWeb can’t be beat. They have the most AMAZING customer service I’ve ever experienced and I’ve never noticed any downtime. While it’s impossible for a host to be up 100% of the time, LiquidWeb is incredible, and their Heroic Support can’t be beat.
And holy cow, they just released their Managed WP Hosting so now they do that too!
You can’t host just any site on Rainmaker, it’s designed for Genesis WordPress membership sites. Although you can leave the membership component out. While quite pricey and somewhat limiting in terms of development (you can’t add plugins), Rainmaker makes the list of my favorite hosts because of their incredible support and documentation. If you or your client is in need of a membership site, Rainmaker is my top recommendation. Everything is built-in and they handle all the security and backups, which means your clients don’t have to.
Hosting is important. More than important, hosting is an essential part of your client’s website. Don’t taint their experience working with you by recommending a cheap host with awful support just because you get a good affiliate payout (I’m talking about you, Bluehost). Take the time to research different hosting companies and create a list of top-notch hosting providers that you can recommend based on your client’s needs.
